Lol, I enjoyed that tweet and thought I’d kick off today’s recap with it. Anyway, chapters 43-50, right? Chapter 43 (“Hark!") is one of those short little chapters that aren’t even a full page, but it is maybe the only chapter in Moby-Dick whose title includes an exclamation point, which is surprising as its a punctuation Melville seems rather fond of and uses liberally. “Hark!”’s primary purpose is to foreshadow the appearance of Ahab’s secret crew that appears a few chapters later. Also, it includes the fun word scuttle-butt, which is a small barrel from which the sailors get their fresh water. It’s basically the sailor office water cooler. Hence, gossip. At one of my previous places of employment, the daily team standup was called the scuttle-butt, I only include this because some of m’colleagues from this company are reading this. Tech is weird.
In the Heart of the Sea is fine? Some cool stuff, a shot of what it looks like to actually pull oil out of a whale (I imagine we get a whole chapter(s) about that from our buddy Ishmael), and both Thor and Spider-Man. Directed by Ron Howard, if that does it for anyone :)
I can't believe it takes till this set of chapters to finally see a whale on the page and it's not even Moby Dick :D
I did love our brief cute check in with the married couple - it's been a minute since we saw them interact. And it's for a joint weaving project. Ish is so dramatic in this moment: "with my own hand I ply my own shuttle and weave my own destiny into these unalterable threads."
I also enjoyed the moment between Flask and Daggoo: "But the sight of little Flask mounted upon gigantic Daggoo was yet more curious; for sustaining himself with a cool, indifferent, easy, unthought of, barbaric majesty, the noble negro to every roll of the sea harmoniously rolled his fine form. On his broad back, flaxen-haired Flask seemed a snow-flake. The bearer looked nobler than the rider"
