Hi! My name is Holly and it’s my first time reading Moby Dick. I’m currently catching up on everything and loving this book! My sister recommended that I should join this substack with her and follow along and I’m so glad I did! Thank you!
Welcome Holly! That's so wonderful to hear. One of the best parts about reading Moby Dick was reading it with friends and loved ones and discussing it together. I hope you enjoy the experiencing of reading and discussing this book with your sister!
I really love the serialisation and the commentary you're giving here. It's great. I have always tried to resist reading commentary on Moby-Dick because I love it so much and have come up with some wild ideas about what it's about which I'd be sad to find out were either stupidly obvious or plain wrong. But I'm glad to have come across yours.
I thought I also might mention here that I've started a slightly odd project in which I link places I've been to get coffee with quotes from The Book. I thought it's possible that people reading this might like it. Hope it's ok to link below - I'm not selling anything.
So, I hold the (perhaps somewhat controversial) opinion that Ishmael and Queequeg are rocking an intense friendship, rather than a romance. Literature needs more dedicated m/m friendships like that, and I've personally never seen their relationship as romantic.
As an aside, I got a good laugh over your comment that we all want to be Queequeg and no one wants to be Ishmael. I definitely see myself in Ishmael -- somewhat "uppity" to use your word, but also prone to introspection and introversion, full of useless knowledge, enthusiastic, but somewhat moody. Of course, Queequeg is much cooler, but I guess someone had to be Ishmael, haha.
I’m loving this re-read of Moby Dick and your chapter summarizations. I read Moby Dick 50
Years ago when I was very young. My mother was instrumental in my love of reading and most of all the classics. Hemingway, Rand, Steinbeck, and others.
Like you, I’m a huge fan of the X-Files by my own DNA having been born in Roswell, NM.
