Phew, I found that challenging! But I do enjoy that the Great American Novel includes a detour to highlight the novel's themes of exploitative labor practices.

This also reminded me of the Horatio Hornblower series, where living and working aboard a ship requires all mariners to have a pretty savvy grasp of psychology. Subject to your superiors' whims, anxieties, and cravings -- if you don't develop a strategic mindset about your fellow sailors' needs, you won't survive...
